Carcassonne and its tourist treasures await you! Embark on a journey into the past in this city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city is divided into two areas: the upper town and the lower town. It remains to this day the largest medieval city in Europe and one of the most visited in France.
Now is the time to book your stay and visit the capital of the Aude department with your family or friends!
Carcassonne, the city
Otherwise known as the upper town, the city of Carcassonne's Château Comtal (Count's Castle) and ramparts (walls) are extremely well preserved. These are some of the largest fortifications in Europe.
During your walk in the city, discover the castle and the Watch Tower, Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse Basilicas and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Carcassonne, lower town
The lower town, also called La Bastide is the modern centre of Carcassonne. This is the heart of the city with shops, boutiques and pedestrian streets.
Strolling through the lower town, discover the beautiful Carnot Square and Neptune fountain and several beautiful civil and religious monuments (such as Saint-Vincent Church). Since the Canal du Midi passes through the city, the lower town also has a small marina and a sluice gate.
A gastronomy strongly attached to its local products
Discover the traditional cuisine of the south-west of France! Enjoy delicious specialities like ham shank or goose “confit” (preserves) and enjoy some sweets such as chocolates or the Briques de la Cité.
Other dishes that you should try include the Cassoulet, duck liver pâté and artichoke salad.
Activities and culture in Carcassonne
Every summer, the Carcassonne Festival welcomes many visitors (200,000 spectators in 2012). It is now one of the most important festivals in France.
As for activities, Carcassonne is no exception. Stroll along the many hiking trails in the area and discover a lively and enchanting nature. Golf, bowling, go-karts, adventure park... You will always find something to suit your taste!
