To know before you go in Bourges !

Welcome to the capital of the Cher department!  Listed as a "City of Art and History", Bourges has many tourist attractions.  With an exceptional architectural heritage (particularly with its cathedral) and a rich cultural activity, it is a nice city to explore and visit.

With a little more than 66,000 inhabitants, Bourges is the most populated city in the Cher department.  It is ranked as the third city in the Centre region behind Tours and Orléans.

Bourges is also famous for the "Printemps" music festival, very popular with lovers of good music.

Bourges, a rich architectural heritage

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the must-see historic site of the city of Bourges.  Built between the late 12th century and the end of the 13th century, it is listed as a Historic Monument since 1862 and as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992.  The cathedral is a quite remarkable Gothic style building and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in France.

Its pretty narrow streets, half-timbered houses and other monuments such as the Jacques Cœur Palace also contribute to the attractiveness of Bourges in terms of architecture.

Bourges, a vibrant cultural life

Bourges has the first House of Culture thanks to André Malraux and is considered a cultural role model city.  There are many museums to visit: the Museum of Decorative Arts, Berry Museum, Estève Museum and the Museum of Natural History.

It is obviously impossible to talk about Bourges without mentioning the "Printemps de Bourges" music festival created in 1977, which takes place every year in April.  This event is an opportunity to discover established bands and emerging artists.  The festival hosts more than 200,000 festival-goers every year.

Bourges, activities and leisure

Bourges has many activities available to keep you busy during your family holiday or with friends: swimming pool, golf, go-karts, bowling, cinema...  You will always find something to suit your taste!

Nature-walks lovers will also like the large marsh located just 10 minutes away from the city centre and will enjoy wandering the 135 hectares of gardens surrounded by canals and rivers.  It is the ideal place for a walk or bike ride!
